Comprises diaries, 23 Nov. 1915-10 July 1919; letters to his wife Ella at home in East Kew, Vic., 23 Nov. 1915-25 May 1919, written on the voyage from Australia on the troopship Ceramic, on active service in Egypt, France and Belgium and while on leave in England, Scotland and Italy; postcards with scenes of France and Belgium, mostly with letters to Ella on the verso, 30 Aug. 1916-1 Aug. 1917; cards, mainly Christmas cards, 1917-1918, including designs by Will Dyson and L. H. Howie; a paybook; and photographs, mainly aerial views, some identifiable as Western Front battlefields, as well as three portraits of Henderson, ca. 1916, 1919 and ca. 1930s, and a view of the troopship in which he returned to Australia in 1919.

William Alexander Henderson was born in Nov. 1882, educated at the Melbourne Technical College, and married Ella Uberfuchshuber in 1912. He served with the Australian Military Forces with the rank of Captain in the Australian Engineers. He was appointed to the Australian Imperial Force on 6 Aug. 1915 and with the rank of Major commanded the 5th Field Company Engineers. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on 26 Jan. 1917, commanded the 1st Pioneer Battalion, and was transferred to the Royal Eng...
